Monogram Creator + Palette
AnsweredFirst off, I've never really been happy with my Palette gear. Not because of the hardware, but the software. The Palette software was mediocre at best and my Palette gear has sat in it's box for most of it's life since the original Kickstarter. I won't get into the details of why now as it's not important. It is however one of the reasons I didn't Kickstart the new set even though I really liked what I saw in terms of the hardware.
Monogram Creator seems to resolve most if not all of my issues with the original Palette software. However, it's buggy:
- Premier Pro default profile only partially works. ie. Zoom and Cut all layers doesn't work
- Having Monogram Creator running with my Palette gear plugged in prevents my screen saver from coming on.
- Can't upload custom profile images. Just shows a black box.
I'm running 4.1.2 on Windows 10
How committed is Monogram to fixing the legacy compatibility? Are these general Monogram Creator bugs or bugs specific with the old Palette gear?

Hey Paul, thanks for the feedback—glad to hear that, in general, the new Creator software is working better for you. Let me speak to each concern point-by-point:
Premier Pro default profile only partially works. ie. Zoom and Cut all layers doesn't work
The Pr integration requires both a control surface plugin AND an extension to be installed into Premiere Pro. This sounds like the extension didn't install... click the plug icon at the bottom right of your Pr profile, then select option 3: re-install extension, then restart Pr and Creator as necessary.
If this doesn't work, please follow up here and we'll log a bug. This wouldn't be affected by Palette vs Monogram hardware as it's a software-level integration.
Having Monogram Creator running with my Palette gear plugged in prevents my screen saver from coming on.
As a troubleshooting measure, please create a blank Universal profile and switch to this before leaving your PC—does this help? I don't have an immediate answer but this will help us find out what might be causing it.
Can't upload custom profile images. Just shows a black box.
This is an inherent limitation of the Palette core—its screen doesn't allow for dynamically writing new images; they must be pre-loaded into the firmware file instead. This means it only supports icons corresponding to the default apps/integrations list.

One of the largest and most resource-intensive engineering efforts when making Creator was unifying key Palette and Monogram functionality into a common format—this is what makes Creator backwards-compatible and allows us to extend the vast majority of Creator functionality to Palette owners.
There are a few things like the custom screen icons, or new MIDI message types, that are hardware-dependent and simply can't be applied to Palette retroactively through software. But the software-level support is nearly identical between both streams of hardware; as a result you'll see that Creator bug fixes and compatibility updates apply to your Palette.

That fixed it, thanks.
Edit: Actually no. Once I got into a proper editing session, it works sometimes, but usually doesn't. All the other functions work correctly, but for some reason razor all tracks only works some of the time, about 1/5 presses. I swapped the buttons around so it's not the hardware.

That's fine, but then it should be limited in the software and not just have either a black or white square show up.

So yeah. If I have NO universal profile (no profiles at all) but the monogram is plugged in and software running, the computer goes to sleep. I deleted everything in Monogram and setup a default universally profile and assigned one function. My computer no longer went to sleep.

The implementation of the media controls in the Palette core seems to keep some systems awake—we've found this is highly variable, depending on different motherboard/bios settings (primarily with Windows machines).
The media controls are generated in the Core module firmware, not in software. This is, unfortunately, a case where there is no software-based solution that can fix a hardware/firmware limitation with the Palette core. It's been addressed in the Monogram hardware through a completely new and rearchitected firmware.
Aside from upgrading to a Monogram core, the easiest/cheapest workaround is to make a second Universal profile that has zero assignments -- it's completely blank. Switch to this profile before leaving your computer dormant and this should remedy the problem since it will clear the media assignments in the Palette core that are keeping your machine awake.
